Keith out and about

7th December 2010

The beginning of December has been a busy time for Keith; as well as preparing for the Coronation Street live episode this Thursday, he's been out and about at a few events.

On the 1st December, he and the family went along to see Mikey in his opening performance of Aladdin at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin and on the 4th, the annual Keith Duffy Masquerade Ball in aid of autism took place. Pictures from both these events are in our gallery now...

Inside Soap Survey results

6th December 2010

The results of the Inside Soap survey are in already and Keith was picked as the second sexiest male in the history of Coronation Street behind Rob James Collier who played Liam Connor. Not bad for the amount of characters who must have walked the famous cobbles over 50 years!

Corrie's big week...

1st December 2010

Next week is Coronation Street's 50th Anniversary and as well as an explosive set of episodes - which, seeing as Keith's character Ciaran works in the very bar that explodes, he's bound to get caught up in somehow (eek!) - there's other special programming worth keeping an eye on just in case, for glimpses of Keith...

First up on Saturday 5th December is 'Stars on the Street', a documentary about the celebrities who have starred in Corrie. It's a repeat, so I know Keith appears in this, think it must have been filmed in 2008, as if I remember correctly, his hair was longer; like it was in the Love You Anyway' video. Anyway, if you fancy watching that, it's on ITV1 at 5.15pm.

On Monday 6th December, ITV2 is showing 'Coronation Street Uncovered: Live' on the night of the tram crash. It's a behind-the-scenes show which will feature interviews with cast members and we can always watch in the hope Keith may be one of them! Tune in at 10.00pm.

On Tuesday 7th December, the Lorraine Kelly show is coming live and direct from the corrie set, if you're around at 8.30am it may be worth watching just in case he appears on this.
Also on Tuesday, the first part of 'Coronation Street: 50 Years, 50 Moments' is being broadcast on ITV1 at 9.00pm. If it's one of those 'talking heads' type programmes he might be a part of it. Not definite, but again, worth a look just in case. Might be a good programme to watch anyway!

The second part of 'Coronation Street: 50 Years, 50 Moments' is on Thursday 9th December (the night of the live episode - oooh!) again at 9.00pm. If you watch the first, there's no point missing the second, after all you'd miss the all important number one moment! Oh and you never know... glimpses of Keith!
Also that night, the 'Celebrity Juice: Coronation Street Special' is on at 10.00pm on ITV2. As far as I know, he isn't on this but you may want to watch it anyway. Keith's (Ciaran) on screen girlfriend Kym Marsh (Michelle) definitely appears as well as former on screen fiance Shobna Gulati, (Sunita) so at least there's a Keith connection!

Friday 10th December sees Paul O'Grady host 'Coronation Street: The big 50' on ITV1 at 9.00pm; featuring a quiz, musical performances and some surprises. This is the one everyone should watch as Keith is joined by his Boyzone bandmates Ronan & Shane, and corrie castmate Kym Marsh to sing 'No Matter What'.

Magazines

Keith appears in two magazines this week 'Inside Soap' and 'Ok!'

In 'Inside Soap' he features in a special Corrie 50th Anniversary pull out, which, believe me is worth buying for the gorgeous picture alone! There's also a mini interview where he talks about his memories of watching Coronation Street as a youngster, which storyline he liked, the anniversary itself and the live episode.

In 'Ok!' there's a few pictures of him at Simon Gregson's (Corrie's Steve) wedding; mainly small ones but there's one big photo of him with the happy couple and other fellow Coronation Street cast members. I must say he's looking rather lovely in his glasses..

And finally...

Kym Marsh on working with Keith..

22nd October 2010

Keith's Corrie co-star Kym Marsh (Michelle) was interviewed in the Inside Soap Coronation Street special recently and one of the questions was about their current storyline together; here's what she had to say...

Are you pleased that Michelle and Ciaran have got together after all their ups and downs?

"Obviously when something has been building up for so long, there comes a point where you want people to get together because you become very attached to your character and want them to be happy! So we were ready to take that forward, and we've had a lot of fun. Keith Duffy is a lovely guy to work with. Don't tell him I said that, because he'll use it against me! But I've been lucky to have so many scenes with him. He's cheeky, and has a great personality and a heart of gold to go with it."

Soaplife Interview

22nd October 2010

Keith was interviewed for Soaplife magazine and Whatsontv.co.uk about the storyline between Ciaran and Michelle (played by Kym Marsh.) It appeared online on the 1st October so I'm a bit late posting it up but here it is for anyone who missed it...

Is this Ciaran's long kiss goodbye?

Coronation Street's Keith Duffy tells Soaplife that Ciaran gets the kiss from Michelle he's dreamed of - but is it too little too late?

Just when it looks like Ciaran's going to give up on Michelle and head for Scotland, she finally falls into his arms. And, for Keith Duffy, it's not a moment too soon. "He's been chatting her up for nearly a year and she's been playing so hard to get he's convinced she's not interested - until he tells her he's leaving," says Keith. But has she left it too late?

Is Ciaran serious about moving to Scotland?

"Well, Michelle's broken his heart so that's why he's decided to move on."Michelle was actually pretty gutted when Ciaran told her about the job.

Did he realise?

"Not a clue. She didn't show it."

Does Ciaran actually love Michelle?

"I think so. He's come to realise Michelle might be a keeper, the sort of girl he'd consider settling down with. But I don't think he could admit he loves her first. He couldn't handle the rejection. He's got a lot of male pride."

Would they make a good couple?

"They would, but I think it might also be one of those relationships where they're pulling the clothes off each other one minute then she's throwing her high heels at him the next."

We've heard that Ryan goes to Scotland for the night with Ciaran. What's that about?

"Ryan gets a university place in Glasgow, but he's afraid to accept it because he doesn't want to leave his mum on her own. Ciaran takes Ryan up there and tries to talk him into accepting the offer."

Why would Ciaran want Ryan to move to Scotland?

"So he can have another go at Michelle! No, seriously, he's a bit of a father figure to Ryan... He's just encouraging him to grab this opportunity."

From what we've heard he does more than that - he tells Michelle about Ryan's plans...

"Yes. Ciaran thinks Michelle should know that Ryan's turning down the Glasgow uni place on her account. She's actually very supportive and says she'd never want to stop Ryan from doing what he wants to do in life."

What happens on Ciaran's last night? Does he stay or go?

"They finally kiss, but whether it's a first and a last kiss...I'm not saying."

If Ciaran does stay, are you worried he might die in the tram crash?

"Everybody wonders if they're going to get killed off. And they're being more secretive about scripts and storylines than ever before..."

Herald.ie Article

13th August 2010

By Keith Duffy

I'VE spent most of the week in Manchester filming scenes for Coronation Street, although I did manage to fit in a brief trip home to Dublin for a day.

I have to admit I find it exhausting commuting between Dublin and the UK as I seem to spend half my life at the airport, but it has to be done as otherwise I would never get to see my family.
Ironically, when I got home on Wednesday morning I was actually banned from the house as we've signed up to take part in a series of All Star Family Fortunes later this year.

There was a camera crew there all day filming with my wife Lisa and the kids. My Mam was there as well and Lisa's Dad. I'll be taking part in the show as well, but I wasn't allowed to be around when they were shooting the links as it's all very top secret.

As a result, I basically spent most of my one day off at home driving around the city. We did get to have some family time that evening though.

I was due back on set for filming yesterday afternoon, but I stayed at home until the last minute so that I could be around to launch Cadbury Ireland's €15m Bring Back the Play campaign along with Amy Huberman.

The two of us were down at Merrion Square to pose for pictures, where I was dressed up in a T-shirt with stripes on it and she was representing the spots.

I've known Amy for years as we actually worked on The Clinic together a while back. She's a great girl and always a pleasure to work with so it was nice to catch up with her. After that I had to dash straight to Dublin Airport in order to get back to Manchester on time.

Luckily the lads in DAA are fantastic. They look after me really well and get me in and out quickly so it takes some of the stress out of flying.

I've been putting in quite a few long days on the set lately as I have a big storyline coming up with Kym Marsh.

Excited

I was over there filming all day on Monday and then on Tuesday evening we were shooting night scenes, which I always enjoy. There's nothing quite like filming on the cobblestones when it's dark outside.

Basically, my character, Ciaran McCarthy, has been trying his luck with Kym's character Michelle ever since he first arrived on the street and now it looks like he's finally going to get somewhere.

I can't give too much away about it but I think viewers are definitely going to be surprised by what they see. Ciaran McCarthy is such a good character to play, he's all about having the laugh and the banter.

I will also be playing a part in Corrie's 50th anniversary celebrations, which I'm very excited about. To have such a successful show on the air for 50 years is a huge credit to all involved so I'm honoured to get to play a part in it all.

I'm staying on indefinitely on the show for the time being and then we'll see what happens in the New Year when myself and the Boyzone lads get back on the road.

We're not recording at the moment. The album is still doing very well here and around the world. Obviously we were number one here and in the UK for weeks, so we'll be touring that album next year. We're touring February, March and April of next year so I'm looking forward to that and getting back on the stage. It's still very difficult and surreal not having Stephen (Gately) around when we're planning these things. There are moments and days where I still get overcome by grief but it's getting easier the more time goes on. It's hard to believe that it's coming up to a full year since his death now. I'll never forget hearing that news last October. I was in a permanent state of shock and devastation for three weeks afterwards.

At the time of his death we and the family were very understanding of the media interest and appreciated that the public had lost an icon as well.

However, when it comes to his anniversary I think it's going to be a much more private affair.

Myself and the lads will probably plan something small to mark it and to reminisce together. We'll be meeting up for a reunion next Monday though as myself, Mikey (Graham) and Shane (Lynch) are due to join Ronan (Keating) to film scenes for the Australian X Factor. He's asked us to come on board and help him pick his acts so that should be a laugh.

In terms of his private life, I don't talk about it at all. Whatever's going on in his life is his business.

RTE Ten: TV feature

13th July 2010

It's safe to say that Ciaran McCarthy is a bit of ladies man. He might even be described as a roving rogue by some of the women in Weatherfield and he's been linked with several female residents, including Sunita, Bev, Tracy and Shelly. Even Liz even made an unsuccessful play for the hunky barman, but he turned her down - it seems his sights are set on another member of the Rovers staff.

Ciaran has made no secret that he fancies Michelle, but for the past number of weeks she's been giving him the complete and utter run around and then, just as she is about to agree to a date, she finds him chatting up another woman. "Ciaran knows Michelle has a soft spot for him," explains Keith Duffy, who plays the Irish charmer, "but she's just playing hard to get and he keeps messing it up for himself. He even ends up in his boxer shorts behind the bar at the Rovers, after a dinner date disaster."

Ciaran may be enjoying the chase, but it looks like it won't be long before Corrie's cheeky chappy will get his girl - and just before the 50th anniversary celebrations, which Keith reveals the soap bosses want him to be a huge part of. "They are gearing up now for some really big storylines for the 50th anniversary and I know they want me to be a very big part of one of those storylines. I can only imagine that will have something to do with himself and Michelle. They are getting together and their relationship is fiery."

When Keith first joined Coronation Street back in 2002 he used to commute between Dublin and Manchester at the weekends. This time round he is trying to get back and forth a lot more, he doesn't want to miss any time with the children if at all possible. "The travelling side of my job is very difficult. The kids are in school and I wouldn't want to uplift them, or move them anywhere else. J (Jordan) is 14 now and in secondary school, it's an important time for him with his friends. Mia is 10 and she's doing very well. I don't want to rock the boat."

When Keith gets home during the week, he is straight back into daddy duty, dropping the kids where they need to be, doing the dishes or hoovering! But it's not only the kids he wants to come home to see, he also misses his wife of 12 years, Lisa, very much when they are apart. "Lisa and I have been together so long now that she is not only my wife, she is my best friend. Like every relationship and friendship we have our ups and downs. But you always know you are never going anywhere, if there is a problem you just have to find your way forward."

With Boyzone selling over 20 million records worldwide, including five number 1 albums, receiving numerous music awards and Keith also starring in one of the most watched programmes in Ireland and England you would think the amiable Dubliner would be getting close to fulfilling his career ambitions, but he's not, as he explains, "I am very ambitious. I really want to further my career in acting. I love being in Boyzone and I love being part of a band. But to be honest with you, I'm more into Boyzone because I love spending time with the lads, we love reminiscing and having the craic together. But it's not my passion. I love being there because it's all I know and it's all I done for a long time. Me and the lads are so close - we've spent most of our lives together, we miss each other when we're not together. But my passion now and my ambitions now would definitely be towards the acting."

Keith's ultimate dream would to be to end up on an American TV series, starring in something like CSI, Grey's Anatomy or The Wire. "These are amazing TV shows. They have fantastic direction and budgets and wonderful script writers. That's were I would love to end up,. I never went to acting school or drama college, I was lucky enough to learn from the ground up on a show like Coronation Street. I've done some stage work too. I'm starting to explore a lot of the acting avenues - but ultimately American TV is where my dream is at."

It's only been ten months since Keith's "Boyzone brother" Stephen Gately, tragically passed away while on holidays with his partner Andrew Cowles in Majorca. It's not surprising that Keith describes the time since his death as extremely tough and heartbreaking for himself, Ronan, Keith and Mikey. The release of their album Brother earlier this year, which reached number 1 both here and in the UK, was a bittersweet moment for the band. "I'm glad that it was sweet and not just bitter you know. When we finished the album we just put it out there. We didn't do much promotion and we were absolutely blown away by its success. It's very hard not having Stephen here to share that with us. We're going on tour next year and it's going to be very strange without him. To be honest I haven't even thought about that yet, I can't. We're just going to have to deal with it when we get to that stage."

Understandably Keith did not want to talk about the recent press reports that surround Ronan's marriage, but he was more then happy to tell how envious he is of his pal's new job as one of the judges on the Australian X Factor. "Listen if anybody ever wanted to pay me a lump of money to go to Australia I'd be there. Of course I'd be interested. It's a great gig he's after getting out there. It's a huge show, it's the biggest production that's ever been put together for a show in Australia. It's going be massive. People must remember that Ro's been in the music business since '93. We all had 6 or 7 years out, but Ro went off and did other things in the music business. A change is as good as a rest they say, so I think he will really enjoy it."

Coronation Street: Ciaran & Michelle to get steamy!

2nd May 2010

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/gameon/view/133378/Coronation-Street-Kym-Marsh-hooks-up-with-Keith-Duffy/

STREET star Kym Marsh is getting to grips with one of soapland’s hottest hunks – while preparing for her real-life wedding.

The sexy actress, 33, who plays Rovers barmaid Michelle Connor, has been filming steamy scenes with Boyzone singer Keith Duffy, 35.

But when she’s away from the cameras, she’s been busy organising her marriage to ex-Hollyoaks actor Jamie Lomas, 30.

And while Kym is heading for happiness in her personal life, Michelle could be facing a rocky ride with charmer Ciaran McCarthy.

A Corrie insider told the Daily Star Sunday: “It’s been a while since she had a love interest, so who better to change all that than Ciaran?

“When Ciaran first returned to Weatherfield, Michelle was the girl who really caught his eye.
There was definitely a chemistry between them but after a few flirty scenes together it was decided to wait a while before getting them together.

When Ciaran finally makes his move, Michelle is pretty smitten – and who can blame her.

“But she’s not stupid. Michelle knows he has a roving eye and knows exactly what she is letting herself in for.

The writers are going to have a lot of fun with these two.

They’ve got some great stuff coming up but everyone will have to wait and see whether or not he strays.”

The pair are both nominated at Saturday’s British Soap Awards – for Sexiest Female and Sexiest Male.

Corrie: Ciaran organises speed dating night‎

28th April 2010

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/playlist/view/132705/Coronation-Street-Keith-Duffy-sets-up-speed-dating-night/

POP hunk Keith Duffy will turn the Rovers Return into a Boyzone in a bid to find all the single fellas a girlfriend.

The 35-year-old singer’s cheeky character Ciaran McCarthy turns Cilla Black by setting up a speed dating night in the local boozer.

He thinks he is on to a sure-fire winner because not only will he help couples get together, he can also bring in more cash for landlady Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard, 53).

Ciaran convinces her by moaning: “This place is like God’s waiting room.
“Speed dating is sure to treble the number of punters, not to mention the ticket sales at a fiver a time.”

He hires Rosie Webster (Helen Flanagan, 20) to help drum up support.
Dressed in hot pants and roller skates, she heads to the High Street with fliers.
But Ciaran’s plan does not go down well with everyone.

Shopkeeper Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden, 70) tells Liz: “Speed dating is like fast food, instant gratification with a greasy aftertaste.”

Keith talks about The Door

23rd March 2010

http://www.rte.ie/arts/2010/0323/duffyk.html

Boyzone singer and 'Coronation Street' star Keith Duffy is taking time out of his busy schedule to participate in a new two-part show for ITV called 'The Door'.

Six celebrities take on the challenge of enduring a multitude of tests, all designed to instil in them a mix of emotions, from fear to total confusion, as they discover what lies behind The Door.

Duffy's Coronation Street castmate Jennie McAlpine also takes part as well as actors Dean Gaffney and Louisa Lytton, presenter Michael Underwood and singer Frankie Sandford from The Saturday's.

So what is The Door?

The Door is a difficult show to try and explain as the concept is quite unique. People kind of love seeing celebrities stuck in a box full of rats, for some reason, so there's loads of stuff like that! The set is fantastic and it's very impressive.

Were you scared about taking part?

I'm pretty easygoing and there's nothing I wasn't looking forward to, but the one thing that got me more than anything was claustrophobia and being in the dark. That was the thing that really got my heart racing.

So how was it?

Doing The Door was great fun. Everybody has different limitations as to the extremes they can put their bodies and minds through and, for some of the celebrities, it didn't take an awful lot for them to freak out.

Are you competitive?

I've trained in sports for most of my life so I'm competitive in that respect but it wouldn't break my heart if I didn't win. I gave it my all and enjoyed myself but I'm not competitive to the extreme. I'm just competitive as people generally are. We had to work as a team when we were entering through a new door and the first part of the challenges and then we become individuals and work against each other. It kind of plays with your head a little bit. The Door kind of shows you a really nice side where you're helping people and working together as a team and then shows your not so nice side where you're out for yourself.

Was it a pleasant experience?

Yeah, absolutely, we had a really good time. We really got to know each other quite well. Dean Gaffney I have known for years, so we had fun together. And Jennie, we're in Coronation Street together, so we're good mates. I'd never met the others before but they are all really nice.

How tough was it?

Some of the challenges are very physical but it was great fun doing the show. When viewers see the programme on the television, the way it's lit, the amount of cameras, it is huge.

Will there be lots of tension?

There's plenty of screaming from Dean Gaffney, and lots of retching!

The first part of the two-part special, The Door hosted by Chris Tarrant and Amanda Holden, can be seen on ITV on Friday, 2 April at 9pm.

Keith Duffy: "Success is bittersweet"

Keith Duffy has spoken of his delight over Boyzone's recent chart success.

The band, who released new LP Brother last week, beat Gorillaz to secure the number one slot in the UK album chart last Sunday.

The record is their first as a four-piece since Stephen Gately died last October.

Duffy, 35, said: "It's number one - it doesn't get much better than that!"

The singer also said a number one album is "bittersweet" but a "fantastic tribute" to Gately, who would have celebrated his 34th birthday today.

Keith Duffy teases Corrie love plot

17th March 2010

Keith Duffy has revealed that he doesn't mind which Coronation Street regular his character settles down with.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the Boyzone singer, who plays Ciaran McCarthy on the ITV1 soap, hinted that his alter ego may be linked to Sunita, Michelle and Leanne in coming months.

Asked about possible love interests, he replied: "I'm sure there'll be one than one! [He's] possibly [still got feelings for Sunita] but I don't know whether it's feelings of a sexual nature, or whether he just cares about her.

"He's been chatting [Michelle] up. A lot of my dialogue has been charming her. She seems to be coming round a bit, so I don't know whether that's a sign of things to come..."

He added of a potential romance with Peter's girlfriend Leanne: "I don't know. I don't like that side of him! You shouldn't be messing with your mate's women!"

In a taxi with... Boyzone star Keith Duffy

20th February 2010

The singer on coming to terms with the loss of his bandmate Stephen Gately

Keith Duffy has just flown in from Dublin, where he lives, and nice cabbie Steve from Islington is taking us from Heathrow to BBC Television Centre for a guest slot on The Alan Titchmarsh Show. The reason he’s speaking to us, and then to Alan, is because his character Ciaran McCarthy has returned to the Coronation Street cobbles after a gap of nearly five years. ‘Is he going to be back to his good old womanising ways? Yeah, baby. He’s a bold boy!’

But Keith is well aware that, apart from the interest in Ciaran, people will want to ask him about Stephen Gately, his former band mate in Boyzone, who died last October.

‘It’s awkward. Ronan [Keating] had his album out in Australia over Christmas and the press kept asking him about Stephen. Then people said, “Does that guy not talk about anything else?” I don’t want to parade on Stephen’s misfortune. But I miss him, he’s my mate.’

Apart from anything else, he says, coming back to work in Manchester five days a week on Coronation Street has provided a welcome distraction. ‘The past few months have been horrendous. Corrie’s given me a focus, something to get my teeth into, different surroundings.’

You have to know a little bit about Boyzone to understand why Stephen’s death has been so devastating. Keith is 36 next month, but Boyzone came together when he was 18, and he was the second eldest of the group. All of them – Ronan Keating, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham, Stephen Gately and Keith – were young men who grew up within a five-mile radius of each other on the Northside of Dublin. Then Louis Walsh decided to put together an ‘Irish Take That’.

‘We grew up in a pretty rough area of Dublin,’ Keith explains. ‘We went through a lot of life-changing experiences: Ro was very young when his mother passed away. That was tough for him and we were there to help him. So we were close.’

As Keith describes it, Boyzone found fame the hard way, slogging their way round Ireland, ‘travelling around with our pillows, in a van with no windows!’ He remembers their television debut, a disastrous slot on Ireland’s The Late Late Show that is now a YouTube classic: ‘Jedward look like the Rolling Stones compared to us!’

Westlife, the boy band Louis Walsh created next, had it simple, he says: ‘When it did come good for us we’d earned it. It was easy for them to start off – they went straight on to our stage with a sold-out audience.’

What he’s saying is that Boyzone are close because they’ve always had to struggle. ‘Anything we’ve achieved, we’ve achieved together – there’s a great bond between us.’ And that bond has grown stronger since Stephen died. ‘It’s made us realise how close we actually are.’

Keith has two children with his wife Lisa: Jordan, 14 (‘I was so young when he was born that we’ve kind of grown up together; we’re more like friends’), and Mia, ten next month.

Mia has autism so, Keith says, she has a different way of dealing with her emotions. She provided a welcome tonic when he returned from Majorca, where Stephen died, to arrange his friend’s funeral. ‘I walked into my kitchen and she said, “Hi Dad, Stephen died so now you guys are only four. You’ve got to finish the album because Stephen said you’re bringing a new album out in 2010 and you can’t let Stephen down.”

I said, “She’s right – we have to do this for Stephen.” The lads all agreed.’

So Boyzone will release the single ‘Gave It All Away’ on 1 March as a tribute to Stephen, followed by a new album a week later. Keith says that it would be nice if it sold well, but in the main he’s been thankful for the experience of recording the song and making the video, both of which feature Stephen. ‘It’s actually helped me deal with the grieving process much better than I was. I was struggling to move on for a while.’

But move on he has, to Coronation Street, and, he hopes, further fields. ‘I’m very ambitious but I’m the wrong side of 35. I’m enjoying my time in Corrie but, to be honest, what I’d really love to do is American TV. I’m on the best show in Britain at the moment, but American TV just has that special shine to it. I love The Wire. I’d love to be in something like that.’

Herald Article

12th February 2010

http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/mikeys-eurovision-plans-may-backfire-badly-on-him-warns-bandmate-keith-2060842.html

Boyzone star Keith Duffy fears his bandmate Mikey Graham's plans to represent Ireland at the Eurovision song contest could backfire -- and have a negative impact on his career.

The dad-of-two admits he is concerned that Mikey's participation in the contest could backfire, as his pal is currently riding a wave of success after ITV's Dancing On Ice.

"There is a risk factor to it, of course there is," Keith told the Herald. "Mikey's track record is very good and clean. I think that his own personal profile is now at the strongest and best it's ever been.

"His success on Dancing on Ice has been phenomenal and I'd hate to think that something like this could backfire on him and jeopardise all that.

Duffy meanwhile has had his own hands full, after making a return to popular ITV soap, Coronation Street in recent weeks. And he admitted that financial pressures were partly behind his decision to return to the hit show.

The 35-year-old revealed that investments he made at the height of his pop and acting fame had collapsed in the recession.

"I'm not putting a figure on it but I've had losses on property investments. I've just had to tighten my belt and go out and graft again," he said.

The Dubliner has reprised his role as barman Ciaran McCarthy and says he's been welcomed back to the cobblestone streets with open arms.

Keith went on to explain how he and fellow Boyzone stars, Ronan Keating and Shane Lynch were in the dark about the singer's decision to enter his song, Baby, Nothing's Wrong to be performed by himself, until just a few weeks ago.

"To go for the Eurovision is a brave move and naturally we'll be there backing him the whole way. Mikey keeps his cards close to his chest until he has everything firmed up so we didn't really know too much about it until a couple of weeks ago.

"When it was announced that his song was chosen as one of the finalists in the Eurosong contest he sent us all a text to let us know and we're really happy for him," he added.

The song was originally written by Mikey for his wife, Karen and saw the singer beat off stiff competition from hundreds of aspiring composers including his own bandmate, Ronan Keating to secure his place in the Eurosong final, set to take place on March 5.

The news is sure to have come as a blow to the band's frontman, Ronan, who also missed out on the chance to represent Denmark at the annual song contest this year.

Return to Coronation Street healed my pain, says Boyzone's Keith Duffy

7th February 2010

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/showbiz/celebrity-interviews/2010/02/07/return-to-coronation-street-healed-my-pain-says-boyzone-s-keith-duffy-86908-22025303/

KEITH DUFFY has dried his tears. It's four months since his Boyzone bandmate Stephen Gately died and while he won't ever forget, he can look forward without his eyes misting over.

The singer and actor has returned to the public eye in Coronation Street as Irish charmer Ciaran McCarthy and he credits the soap with helping him deal with losing a best pal.

He said: "Stephen died on October 10, 2009. I've been back in Coronation Street since the end of November and those weeks in between were possibly the worst of my life. Having this gig gave me something else to focus on. It was a saving grace.

There are still days when I can't believe he's gone."

Keith, 35, had known Stephen since they joined Boyzone with coming Ronan Keating, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham and were managed by Louis Walsh. He died from heart failure aged just 33 while on holiday in Majorca with partner Andy Cowles.

In March, release new single I Gave It All Away, featuring Stephen's vocals, and Keith believes his late friend had a hand in picking what will be their tribute song.

He said: "This was one of his favourites. We weren't able to release it two and half years ago due to political reasons. It landed on our laps a week after he died which was bizarre but we all took it as a sign from him it should be released.

"He sings beautifully and the words to it are uncanny in relating to our situation at the moment."

Friendship is something Keith takes seriously and it played a major role in his return to Weatherfield as Peter Barlow's wayward ex-navy mate Ciaran, both behind the scenes and in front of the cameras.

It's been five years since he was last on the show when Shelley Unwin's mother Bev made a drunken pass at home but he has stayed in touch with many of his former colleagues.

He said: "Whenever Boyzone have played in Manchester I'd send an invite down to Corrie. A few people would come to the show and we'd have a drink after it. There was a lot of talk about Ciaran coming back and here I am."

Ciaran's return has meant teaming up once again with Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter, an alcoholic who has fallen off the wagon again. The actor went out of his way to help Ciaran his first time round on the cobbles.

He said: "He's been a true warrior for me and I think it sh ows on screen. We are very comfortable with each other.

"Nobody's happy to see Ciaran back except Peter. He's known for liking a drink and being a ladies man and everyone thinks he's going to help Peter fall of the wagon again but it's the opposite. He tries to help him - not very successfully, I might add. Ciaran has a good heart, he's just a bit of a nutcase."

While Keith is enjoying his return as the roving ladies' man in Weatherfield, he has hopes of a meatier role in the future.

In his absence from the soap, Keith, who is married to Lisa, and has two children Jordan, 13, and Mia, nine, has worked hard at acting - on stage and on TV in Ireland. He's a better actor than w he n h e first started and is keen to show off the results.

He said: "Seven years ago I was coming out of a job I had been in since I was a kid. I was travelling round the world with four other guys and had a great sense of security. Going out on my own and doing a job like Coronation Street which is in so many people's living rooms four nights a week - especially my own family's - was daunting.

"This time round, there's no comparison. There's a massive difference in experience, ability and understanding of the trade. I thought I could give the job a better crack this time."

Keith's in Coronation Street for at least six months and, apart from being separated from his Dublin-based family, is relishing his return. Whether or not it turns into an extended run is out of his hands, as is the decision on whether he would accept any such offer.

He said: "The decision to come into Coronation Street wasn't a decision I took alone. I sat down with the lads and told them what I wanted to do and they gave me their blessing.

"We've lost a member of the band and I don't think we could go any further if the four of us weren't all in agreement.

"I love being in the band but I love being on Corrie. I need this. This is the individual, independent part of my life and we all need that.

"The downside is that my family are in Dublin. The kids miss their daddy but I get home at the weekend and make sure we spend quality time together. You just have to play with the hand you're dealt. And to be fair, my hand is a pretty good one."

Digital Spy Interview

29th January 2010

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/s3/coronationstreet/interviews/a200010/keith-duffy-ciaran-mccarthy-corrie.html

After a five-year break from the role, Boyzone singer Keith Duffy returns to Coronation Street at the beginning of next week as ladies' man and ex-navy serviceman Ciaran McCarthy. The 35-year-old last appeared in July 2005 when Shelley Unwin's mother Bev made a drunken pass at him. Half a decade on and Ciaran's working in a fancy Cheshire restaurant, as Peter and Leanne turn up for lunch in the hope of scoping out the local eatery competition while they prepare to open their new bar. Unbeknown to the pair, however, Ciaran's the head chef and Peter's complaints cause the Irish womaniser to lose his job. How will Peter cope with his wayward mate back in his life? And who'll become the first notch on Ciaran's bedpost? We gave Keith a bell to find out more!

How did the return come about?
"Well when I left back in 2005, it was always the plan at some stage to try and get back on the Street after spending a bit of time at home and whatever. The boys and I got back together in 2007 and I was busy for a few years but when we started going on tour again and played the MEN in Manchester, I sent an invitation over to the cast and crew of Corrie for anyone who wanted to come across to the show. A few of the guys came along and we hooked up at the Lowry Hotel afterwards for a few pints and got talking. A few were saying, 'Would you come back?' and I was like, 'I'd love to come back but I can't see it happening in the future because the band are so busy and one thing and another'."

Were you not ready to return back then?
"Going into 2009 we had a whole new show, a whole new tour and again I sent across an email inviting people if they wanted to come along, and all the while I'd kept in touch with a few people from the press department, and Kieran Roberts who was then the producer and is now the exec producer. On that night we were chatting and I was saying I'd done [Dublin soap The Clinic and Irish soap Fair City] and that I'd got my trade - my apprenticeship if you like - with Coronation Street. If it wasn't for Corrie, I wouldn't have got these other jobs. I said I'd love to return knowing the game a lot better and knowing what I'm doing is a lot better - being a lot more confident with the character. Things just started from there, really."

What happened after that?
"There were a few emails back and forth between me and Kieran Roberts, then Kim Crowther (producer) got in touch with my agent and asked me to fly to Manchester for a meeting regarding nothing, really. At that stage, I hoped it must mean something because I'd told them that the lads in the band were taking some time off - possibly six or seven months - to finish the album. I hate having time off, I much prefer being busy so this was my chance to get back on the Street again. We all agreed and here I am!"

How do we see Ciaran again?
"Peter and Leanne were reading a review of a restaurant in Cheshire that got rave reviews and decide to go over and treat themselves to a lunch meeting to discuss their new wine bar. They're waiting a very long time for their food and Peter goes out to the maître d' and tells him that if he wanted bread and water, he'd have gone to Strangeways. The maître d' apologises and tells him the head chef's a bit of a perfectionist and goes out to the kitchen, pushes him out the door and starts screaming and shouting at him - the chef happens to be Ciaran McCarthy! The maître d' says, 'Don't make me fire you!' and Ciaran says, 'I won't, I resign!' and gets out a bottle of whisky for him and Peter not realising that Peter's on the wagon."

How long are you around for this time?
"A minimum of six months. Enough time to get into some trouble, I'd say!"

Where's Ciaran been?
"All I know is that he's been working as a chef in this restaurant and he's been there for a while. I think he might have gone home to Ireland for a bit and over to the States for a while. He was over with his cousin Mick who owns a cocktail bar in New York and he was over working the cocktail bar for a bit - that bit was in my script along the way - but apart from that I really don't know what he was up to! He was AWOL from the Navy so he could have done a bit of jail time, too."

Who does he have his eye on when he's back?
"[He's] pretty much straight in for Michelle to be fair! It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it! Anything that walks by that's at all attractive or in a skirt he chats up to be honest. He chats up Carla, he chats up Michelle, he's very charming to Liz McDonald who sees it as a come-on - that's a funny scene in itself - Kelly from the factory... no-one is safe!"

Does Ciaran have much to do with Sunita when he's back?
"Yeah - he's been back chatting her up as well. He's under the illusion that herself and Dev are together and obviously he and Dev left on bad terms, so she's on her own in the pub and he goes over and starts chatting her up and charming her again. Sunita was quite up for it because they nearly got married - I think I left her at the altar if I remember rightly."

If you could pick anyone on the Street for him to be involved with, who would it be?
"I don't really mind and I don't think Ciaran McCarthy would mind too much, either - if they're attractive and they like a drink he's happy enough."

New Boyzone album is "tribute to Gately"

29th January 2010

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a199977/new-boyzone-album-is-tribute-to-gately.html

Boyzone star Keith Duffy has declared the group's new record a "tribute" to late member Stephen Gately.

The Irish boyband release Brothers, their first collection of entirely new songs since 1998, on March 8.

"It's all completely original material. There are no covers on it and there's not really any ballads on it either," he told Digital Spy. "It's a whole new sound and it's a whole new dynamic for Boyzone."

Duffy, who reprises his role as chef Ciaran McCarthy on Coronation Street next week, also revealed that Gately was heavily involved in shaping the album's direction.

"Stephen was a big part of picking the tunes that are on the album. I think Stephen would really want us to continue and to release the songs and the album," he said.

However, Duffy also admitted that the group have yet to make any long-term plans.

"I don't know what's going to happen after the album," he said. "Whether we tour again and whether we perform together again, I really don't know. For now we're going to release this album as a tribute to Stephen.

"I'm on Corrie for six months as well so I'm not going to be available for any kind of promotion. I'm just going to let the album work itself - if it's a hit, it's a hit, and if it isn't, it isn't."

Duffy returns to Coronation Street on Monday night.

Keith Duffy teases Graham about 'DOI'

29th January 2010

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/dancingonice/news/a199994/keith-duffy-teases-graham-about-doi.html

Keith Duffy has admitted to teasing his Boyzone bandmate Mikey Graham about his Dancing On Ice outfits.

However, the singer, who returns to Coronation Street next month as Ciaran McCarthy, claimed that Graham had always been a better dancer than him during their boyband days.

"I couldn't wait for the show to start so I could start slagging the clothes he was wearing!" Duffy told DS.

"I went to see him yesterday - they get the day off on Monday so I was in London with him and he was taking it easy and very happy with his success so far.

"I can't judge his dancing - have you seen mine?! Put it this way, he was a lot better than I was!"

When asked whether he would consider taking part in the reality show, Duffy said: "I could never see myself being on it to be honest. I'm a big bloke, I've played a lot of Irish football in my time and I'm a big-boned type of guy.

"I just think I'd look awkward. I don't think I'd look in any way suited to the discipline. You stick me on a set of skates at 34 years of age and it's not going to be very pleasant! I'll probably crack the ice around me!"

New! Magazine interview

26th January 2010

http://www.new-magazine.co.uk/posts/view/17194/Boyzone-star-Keith-Duffy-I-still-can-t-believe-Stephen-Gately-is-dead-/

The past four months have not been easy for Coronation Street actor and Boyzone singer Keith Duffy.

The death of Keith Duffy's Boyzone bandmate Stephen Gately at just 33 shook the world last October.

And for Keith, who had been friends with Stephen for 17 years, the loss is still very hard to come to terms with.

Stephen died from heart failure, while on holiday in Mallorca with his partner Andy Cowles.

His death was devastating for Keith and his bandmates, Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch, and the band will release their new single – featuring Stephen on lead vocals – as a tribute to him.

Meanwhile Keith, 35, is about to return to Coronation Street as Ciaran McCarthy. He joined the show in 2002 and stayed for two years, before returning to Ireland to spend time with his family.

The singer now divides his time between a flat in Manchester and the home in Dublin he shares with wife Lisa, their son Jordan, 13, and their daughter Mia, nine.

Here Keith talks about how he is coping without Stephen, and how Corrie is helping him slowly move forward…

How have you coped since Stephen’s tragic death?
It was a massive loss and there are times when I still can’t believe it happened. Stephen was the glue between us in Boyzone and when he passed, a lot of my confidence went. But apart from how sad I feel, I feel sorry for Stephen. He was so young and had his whole life ahead of him, and he was absolutely robbed.

How did you hear the news?
I was on the way to a night club when Ronan rang me. Everyone came back to mine and there were dozens of people just walking around my house all night, sipping whisky to keep us sedated. Mikey and Shane came round, but the three of us couldn’t stick it, so we went to Dublin airport at 4.30am to catch the first flight to Gatwick to fly to Mallorca.

That must have been a very sad journey…
Usually when we’re all at the airport together, we get people coming up to us, but there were TV screens all around the airport. It was all over the news and nobody said a word to us because everyone knew what had happened. Mikey got some Irish breakfasts and Shane got six bottles of beer, and nobody would charge us for anything. We were doing our best to keep it together, but when that happened, we were in bits with tears streaming down our faces.

Has Corrie helped to take your mind off your grief?
It’s really helped. I’m busy filming and learning my lines, which gives me something else to focus on.

What is your character up to?
Peter Barlow and Leanne Battersby have read rave reviews about a restaurant, and visit in order to pick up some ideas for the wine bar they plan to open. They bump into Ciaran and he ends up returning to Coronation Street with them. It’s not long before he’s eyeing up the ladies!

He is a bit of a Romeo…
He was originally meant to be a bad guy, attempting to seduce Peter’s then girlfriend Shelley. But the way I played it was more charming and it worked, so this time, he’s even more of a charmer.

Do your kids watch Corrie?
There was a scene where I was snogging Shelley’s ma. I’d asked Lisa to make sure my son didn’t see it. But he went round to his grandma’s house and as soon as the show finished, my phone rang. It was Jordan, saying “What the hell do you think you’re doing kissing that granny? I’m going to tell Mum!”

Does Lisa watch it?
No, she doesn’t like seeing me with different women.

You have a single Gave It All Away out in March featuring Stephen on vocals. How does that feel?
It’s annihilating but beautiful. On our original recording, Ronan sang lead vocals on the first verse, which begins, “I want to learn to live before I die”. After Stephen died, we found the original sessions, so it is Stephen singing that line.

How did the song originate?
Mika wrote the song and the band recorded it two years ago, but due to a publishing dispute, it was never released. After Stephen died, Ronan bumped into Mika. The song wasn’t mentioned, but two days later, we got a call saying that we had the song. Stephen sang it all the time and he was raging that we never got to release it, so I’ve no doubt in my mind that he was up there pulling strings. I believe he’s all around us, looking after us.

You are also finishing off the album you began last year…
We felt Stephen wouldn’t have wanted us to stop, and basically, if it never sells a copy, it doesn’t matter – it’s our dedication to Stephen.

Will Boyzone tour again?
The rest of the lads want to, but right now, I couldn’t do it without Stephen.

Would you ever go solo?
I don’t believe my voice would be strong enough for a solo album. Ronan has had a great solo career, but he has no interest in doing anything without the rest of us at the moment. A bit of that is down to Stephen passing, but he’s also seen how much more fun we have when we are together.

You are obviously close…
We have been friends since the age of 17 and I could not fall out with any of them, because our relationship is beyond anything I could do to upset them. It’s the closest bond anyone could have – there’s nobody in the world closer than we are.

Mia has autism. Has her condition changed you?
One good thing that has come out of it is that it has given me more self-belief. I wasn’t very academic at school and the only time I spoke in public was on stage with the band, but Mia’s situation means I do a lot of fund-raising and public speaking on autism. She’s made me grow up and be responsible.

Keith Duffy: I'm not sure I could sing in Boyzone without Stephen..

23rd January 2010

http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2010/01/24/keith-duffy-i-m-not-sure-i-could-sing-in-boyzone-without-stephen-115875-21990101/

Grief-stricken Keith Duffy has revealed that he may never be able to perform on stage with Boyzone again.

“The rest of the lads want to, I’m the only one at the moment who is uncertain,” admits Keith, still struggling to cope with the tragic death of Boyzone bandmate Stephen “Steo” Gately.

“The dynamics on stage without Stephen would be very different. Time is a healer and we’ll see how I feel, but at the moment I couldn’t step on stage without him – no way.”

Keith returns to Coronation Street next month as cheeky barman Ciaran McCarthy – and he says that is helping him come to terms with Stephen’s death.

“That’s what is so great about coming back to Corrie,” he says. “It’s separate to what I did with Stephen and it also helps take my mind off my grief – I’m busy filming during the day and reading my lines at night time.

“I’m living in Manchester, close to the studios, and my wife and kids are in Dublin, so I spend a lot of time on my own, which has given me a lot of time to deal with my inner demons.
“I still get waves of grief and moments when Stephen’s death hits me like a ton of bricks and disbelief kicks in again.”

It is only four months since Stephen died from heart failure at the age of 33 while on holiday in Majorca with his partner Andy Cowles.

The news shocked the music world and while the band is about to release new single I Gave It All Away – featuring Stephen’s vocals – Keith, 35, admits he is still coming to terms with what happened.

“We were friends from the age of 17 and travelled the world together – it is just a massive loss,” he says.

“I looked after him and minded him and we had a great relationship. He was a very spiritual person and he’d get freaked out in hotels and come and stay in my room a lot of the time.

“He preferred company and he’d sleep a lot better if he knew someone was in the room with him.

“But apart from how upset I am, the biggest thing is I feel sorry for him. He had his whole life ahead of him and he’s been robbed. He was so happy and vibrant and friendly and talented and gorgeous and he had so many things he wanted to do.

“He was so excited about the new Boyzone album and so happy we had got back together. He’d had a tough life, but for once everything seemed so clear for him and there was nothing standing in his way.”

When Stephen died Keith and his fellow band mates – Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch – flew straight to Majorca. When they returned to Dublin they visited Stephen’s grief-stricken parents, who asked the group to take over the funeral arrangements.

Keith says: “I said, ‘Right, let’s give our mate a send-off that we’ll never forget.’ We wanted to make sure that it was dignified and respectful. Unfortunately part of organising the funeral meant going into a showroom full of coffins.

“That was so horrible and surreal – picking a box your friend is going to lie in.”

The night before the funeral Keith and the rest of the band slept inside the church with Stephen’s body.

Keith says: “His mum Margaret said he didn’t like being on his own, so we said we would stay in the church with him overnight.

“I was terrified, but we had a lovely night. It was the last night the five of us were together and it was really special.

"The guy who ran the local camping shop sent us sleeping bags, the local pub sent down a crate of beer and some wine and the local chip shop delivered fish and chips and we sat around chatting and talking and laughing about things we knew Stephen would’ve found funny.

“There were pictures of him up all around the church and we all had little chats with him. We did feel he was with us that night.”

While Stephen is still never far from his thoughts, Keith is preparing himself for his second stint in Coronation Street.

He initially joined in 2002 and was only meant to stay for three months, but viewers quickly fell for the charms of Irish barman Ciaran – and he ended up staying for three years.

Keith quit to spend more time with his family, but on February 1 Ciaran returns to the cobbles when Peter Barlow and Leanne Battersby accidentally bump into him in a restaurant.

“He walks in to the Rovers and spots Michelle and the Irish charm and blarney start coming out and my goodness do the scriptwriters write blarney for him!” Keith laughs.

In his five years away from Coronation Street, Keith appeared on screen in two Irish dramas, and after Boyzone reunited in 2007 toured with the group.

But the devoted dad spent much of his time with his wife Lisa, son Jordan, 13, and daughter Mia, nine. Mia was diagnosed as autistic when she was 18 months old and Keith admits it initially threatened to tear his family apart.

He says: “It was very hard for me and Lisa – it was a massive blow and we were young and didn’t know much about autism. It became clear very early on that there were no services available so that’s when I started campaigning and that took away my frustration at not being able to help Mia directly; I was helping her on a grander scale.

“It was different for Lisa. She was in denial for a while and couldn’t deal with it. Obviously that caused some problems between us but we fought through it.

“We had the rows and the fights, but it was honest and now we’ve come out the other side stronger.”

Keith’s campaigning has been nothing short of phenomenal.

He initially wanted to raise enough money to fund more places at Ireland’s only school for autistic children, to ensure Mia and 11 other children on the waiting list could all have places.

But he has gone on to raise nearly £5million in seven years and, with other parents in the same position, has helped to open 13 other special schools. Now he is hoping to turn his attentions to Manchester and raise money to open a school there.

Thanks to the specialist help, Mia improved enough to attend a mainstream school, where she has been for the past three years... and Keith is delighted at her progress.

“Academically she’s doing well and socially she’s doing much better – she did tend to spend a lot of time alone doing what we call silly talk, where she recites things she has seen on TV or in a book and gets completely lost in her own world.

"On her seventh birthday she wanted a ballet party but she had no friends and I would have put on a tutu myself for it to have happened. But two years later for her ninth birthday we had 14 friends over to Hamleys toy store for a Barbie party. That’s the level of progress she’s made, so we’re very lucky.”

Cheerful, friendly, passionate and with bags of energy, Keith Duffy comes across in many ways as the archetypal Irishman – much the same as his screen character, former Navy sailor Ciaran.

Yet as his passion for helping autistic children shows, there is a much deeper level to him. And he admits the death of Steo has made him even more reflective – and more appreciative of his friendships with Ronan, Mikey and Shane.

“God forbid anything should go wrong in my life, but nothing can take away the bond I have with the other lads,” he says. “Stephen’s death has made us realise it and be grateful for it.

“It’s the closest bond anybody could ever have in life – I have two brothers and I love them dearly, but this brotherhood with the band is just amazing and a fantastic feeling of security.

“There’s nobody in the world as close to us as we are when we are together.

“We didn’t realise what we had until we were lying on the floor in the church with our mate that night.”
